Former Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC-Africa) at the African Union, Dr. Nkengasong is a graduate of the Universities of Belgium with Masters and PhD degrees in Medical Sciences, Tropical Biomedical Sciences and Pharmaceutical and Virological Sciences. He has also held several positions in the laboratory field at CDC Africa in Atlanta and Abidjan, then in Belgium.
Dr. Nkengasong is also the author of hundreds of publications on HIV diagnosis in international infectious diseases journals. Dr. Nkengasong is a recognized resource in laboratory medicine and has received numerous awards for his work among which the international 2022 Virchow Prize for Global Health.
